COMPLIMENTS MAKE EVERYONE HAPPIER

Updated: Jul 11, 2024

In honor of National Compliment Day the communitee will express the importance of giving and receiving compliments.

A compliment has a powerful effect. It can instill confidence in a child, or validate someone’s hard work. A compliment not only improves the receiver’s mood, but it also says something about the giver. It tells them you noticed. Whether we recognize someone’s achievement or their classic style, a compliment can go a long way.

To give a great compliment, you must first be sincere. People have a way of knowing when we are fake. If you don’t mean it, just don't say it.

There are nine major types of compliments, some are great and others are not:

  1. The ambiguous compliment. when your language leaves a little something to be desired

  2. The too-frequent compliment. the more often you give them out, the less they mean.

  3. The inappropriate compliment. not wise to overstep the boundaries of professional or even personal relationships

  4. The envious compliment. admiration mixes with your desire to have intangible or tangible items can lead to recipient feeling uncomfortable.

  5. The awkward compliment. one given to one person in front of a set of other people who themselves are not being complimented.

  6. The compliment that’s on the wrong set of qualities. off-topic compliment can get them off their game by leading them to develop self-doubts.

  7. The unintentionally rude compliment. It's not always what you say, but how you say it

  8. The sales pitch compliment. The suck-up compliment

  9. The right compliment. sincere, respectful, is meted out in the right doses, and provides no obvious benefit to the giver.

Complimenting character versus a new haircut are different rewards. The first says you respect the person and the other tells them you paid attention. Sometimes the receiver needs to hear one or the other, or both.

Human beings like to be unique, original. Strive to give a compliment about what makes a person stand out above the rest. Take the time to reflect on what you admire about the person.

In giving compliments we open the door to receive them. As I was running errands I choose to give out compliments to almost everyone I came across (just to brighten their day). In giving those compliments I received a great deal of compliments in return. I also noticed that people are more UPBEAT

more willing to help if you just spread a little joy.

Today, on this last day of January I task you all with giving compliments in honor of National Compliment Day.
